Carrying the weight of others’ expectations…
You feel the pressures from your family and culture.
To take care of siblings and elders…
To succeed academically and in your career…
To stuff your emotions…
To juggle home and work responsibilities effortlessly…
To lean on prayer and spirituality when you need help…
The pressure to appear strong…
It’s all too real for women of color.
Historically, our societies have endured suffering and oppression by those with power. People were persecuted for voicing their needs and emotions, so they developed a “silent mindset” to survive.
In time, appearing “strong” meant that you had it all together – that you were numb to your feelings and did what it took to get by and show others they could depend on you.
We still deal with that mentality today, and many of us have never been shown a different way of dealing with “emotional stuff.”
Too often, we live in survival mode, pushing through each day in a constant state of crisis.
Our mental health is complex…
In addition to navigating our daily stressors and struggles, women of color are impacted by racism, sexism, and other forms of oppression. Whether it’s being passed over for a promotion, being paid less than our counterparts, or being expected to balance it all without complaint, these external forces combine to shape our identities and affect our mental health in unique ways.
In addition, there are persistent negative stereotypes like “the angry Black woman” or the “submissive Asian woman” that place limits on how women of color SHOULD act or make decisions.
It’s a recipe for chronic stress, imposter syndrome, and emotional dysregulation.
And when we let the expectations of others go unchecked, we can easily lose sight of our needs and question our worth.
